Today is my Mother’s 77th Birthday but we had an early celebration for her last evening. For the past several years, we had celebrated her birthdays at home but this year, we did it differently. We had her birthday dinner at The Grand Imperial Chinese Restaurant nearby in USJ19 City Mall. We were very happy with the service and I liked the fact that we had a private room to celebrate with our small group of eleven family members and close friends. The table setting was lovely.
The waiter who served us was very attentive. All the dishes were delicious with one exception which was some Kai Lan (a leafy green vegetable) which had been harvested too late and was a bit tough and "woody".
My mum loves ice cream so instead of presenting a regular baked cake, we bought her an ice cream cake from Swensens.
We had a lovely dinner and family gathering and I could see my mum was very happy and that is what I wish she will always be, like this little piggy in the birthday card I made for her.
My mum says this phrase very often, 人生有多少个十年? (How many ten years (decades) does life have?) is the direct translation) It is a phrase intended to remind us that living each day fully, or parhaps more simply; "Don't worry, be happy."
My Quay Lo notes that "Mum practises what she preaches, and demonstrates this to us all the time. Even in the course of performing her daily routines of going to market, reading the Chinese newspaper, sipping iced tea, cooking, washing clothes, and keeping her wet kitchen in tip top shape, Mum shows her enthusiasm. Her radio in the wet kitchen is constantly tuned to the station that broadcasts Chinese opera, to which she sings along enthusiastically. Her voice is still accurate and on key, and she doesn't forget the lyrics. At the market she greets everyone with her big, generous smile and a happy greeting. For a long time I felt she knew everyone. Only later did I realize that she greets everyone with the same warmth and genuine care and if it is someone who wasn't a friend until that moment, they soon become friends. Their animated chatting is always punctuated by laughter. "

Thanks Arthur. Yes that is double boiled abalone chicken soup:D
DeleteP.S.
ReplyDeleteThat bit about your mum talking to everybody at the market...I think that comes with age and also it was something people would do in the good old days when life was pure and simple and everyone was everyone's friend and neighbour.
I do that too and my daughter once asked me why I would do that all the time - talking to and joking with people I did not know - sellers at the market and shops like I had known them for years. She said somehow she could not do that. Maybe that's the thing with young people today - the age of technology. This has become a dying art...it seems.
You are right, even I cannot do what my mum does. I don't talk or joke with strangers very much. Younger generation communicate with machine more than human nowadays so you are right again, it is a dying art. Very soon you will see families sitting at the same table together communicating by sending text on their hp. hehe
