Dust to Dust

Did it occur to you that as you grow older you are less house proud? I did not realize it until I received an email from Darlene (my step daughter’s mum) one morning. This was what she shared with me. I thought it is worth sharing so please spend sometime to read it. This is SO TRUE! My house is more dusty now, I have figured it out finally, have you?

"A house becomes a home when you can write
'I love you' on the furniture .

I used to spend at least 8 hours every weekend
making sure things were just  perfect -
'in case someone came over'
Finally I realized one day that no-one came over;
they were all out living life and having fun!

NOW, when people visit, I don't have to explain the 'condition' of my house.

They are more interested in hearing about the things I've been doing while I was away living life and having fun.
If you  haven't  figured this out yet, please heed this advice. Live is short, Enjoy it.

But  wouldn't it be better to paint a picture or write a letter,   bake cookies or a cake and lick the spoon or plant a seed,   than ponder the difference between want and need?

Dust if you must, but there's not much time....
with wine to drink , rivers to swim and  mountains to climb ,   music to hear and books to read, friends to cherish
and life to lead.

Dust if you must,
but the world's out there with the sun in your eyes, the wind in your hair, a flutter of snow, a shower of rain.  This day will not come around again.

Dust if you must , but bear in mind,
old age will come and it's not kind...

And  when you go - and go you must - you,  yourself will make more  dust!

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what  kind of life you have lived."

So now, stop dusting and go bake yourself a carrot cake. It is so simple to do.This cake is rich and moist. The grated carrot with nuts, raisins and spices give the cake a great flavor and when covered with a tangy and sweet cream cheese frosting, it taste DIVINE! Have a slice with a cup of hot coffee or tea. Relax and ENJOY!

The recipe was posted last year and I believe many of you have missed it. When we had a bloggers gathering early this year at my home, Sonia of Nasi Lemak Lover and her kids, Reese of Reese Kitchen and her daughter, Swee San of The Sweet Spot and Pei-Lin of Dodol Mochi all have tasted my carrot cake and loved it.  Sonia of Nasi Lemak Lover baked this cake sometime this September with some modification to the cream frosting and she was very pleased with the result. Recently, Mel of Through the Kitchen Door baked this too and said she finally found THE carrot cake recipe after trying a few others. For those who are still looking for a tested and tasted easy carrot cake recipe, seek no more, this is it!

Bake if you must, click on the photo below to get the recipe.

  7. What a great reminder to take the time to LIVE and not just plan for the future. I've learned only recently that it is better to make a mess and enjoy it than to simply enjoy the clean house! Messes are always more fun.

    Your cake looks delicious!!

  8. Yey, I gave two thumbs up for this Carrot Cake! This cake is absolutely my favourite. I will bake this to everyone I knew, my parent, my relatives, my friends, and even to my neighbours too! Veron, thank you lots and lots for this wonderful carrot cake!!

  14. I didn't get to eat this... I wasn't there.

What you said here is so true.. agree with both feet up! My house is so dusty! LOL.

  15. The cakes look delicious. I love that quote about being able to do so many things all at once.

  16. wonderful reminder for me to focus on what's more important, besides clearing away dust.. i think the key is moderation.. dust if you must, but don't over-do it :)

  17. I love this type of Carrot Cake. It is so healthy. I just love it.

  18. Thanks for reposting this carrot cake recipe for us new blog readers to discover! And don't worry, even young people have dusty houses (I am old now, but when I was young, I had a dusty house)!

  19. "Yen sung yau kei thor sup nian?" was said in one famous TV series and lots of people have caught on with this tagline literally means 'Life has got how many more 10 years?' So life is short enjoy the nice carrot cake, yummy.

  20. maybe i can now go and find a table cloth and lay it nicely on the table, then i pretend i dont see the dust, then whatever rubbish on the floor, i'll kick it aside or underneath the sofa, then no one can see, good idea or not? LOL! too bad i couldnt get to taste your carrot cake so just got to bake it myself..sigh..

  21. So true! I need to share this with my husband so that he will stop complaining I didn't keep the house spic-and-span .... hahaha

  22. Beautiful! I must remember that when I am in my 50s. Hahaha!

  23. Great post ... How very true! Carrot cake looks great. Thank you so much Quay Po Cooks for visiting my blog & joining as a follower. Now following you :)

  24. I don't have to wait till I grow old. I'm hate house work & I've lucky to have a hubby who does the cleaning. As long as he doesn't sweep the dust under the sofa & bed, I've no complaints. Lol!

I love to cook & he does the washing. I love this post as it gives me even more reason not to do household chores. Heehee!

  25. Yes yes and yes! Totally long as my home doesn't look like those Hoarders on A&E I'm good...

  26. I missed it last year and I LOVE carrot cake!

  27. Veronica,

As OCD as I am, I definitely agree, especially now that I have kids. Cleaning can always wait, but I will never have those child years again once they pass by so I know I need to cherish, enjoy, and make the most out of life because it's not just me anymore, I have a family :D. Thank you for this lovely reminder.

  28. The text on the picture garnered a few chuckles from me, simply because it's so relatable and so true! As we grow older, I guess our perception of life (and our home) changes drastically. And I especially loved the last quote, truly what we share reflects how we live our lives.

And that carrot cake looks exquisite, will take a look at the recipe now. Thanks for sharing, Quay Po!

  29. I like this, just the way I look at it. I actually enjoy going to other's houses and seeing it a bit messy or dusty! A too clean house makes me nervous. :)

I have to make this cake! YUM! What wine did you say goes with it? ;)

  30. i making this carrot cake again and so yummy! Thanks for your kind sharing, Veron.

  31. This is filled with many truths. I wish everyone would realize it sooner rather than later that life passes by much too quickly. blessings, Catherine ox

  32. This made me giggle. That carrot cake looks incredible.

  33. I have always wish to do this and that but $$$ is also a factor. They are easy to spend but hard to earn !

Nice carrot cake you have there.

  34. @Small Kucing
I think we are needed to be reminded now and then:D

You are like my mum, she doesn't scrap off all the icing before she eats it.

Oh, a few of us bloggers meet often:D We always had so much fun together.

You mean the last one? Can do everything at the same time? hehe

I must say this is my all time famous Quay Po Carrot cake and if you want to taste it, you must let me know when you come to KL, I will bake one for you.

I know you don't like cleaning but you are SO lucky to have your robomop and you hubby to do that for you.

Exactly, Kudos to you for having the right attitude!

    @That Girl
No worries now you can try this when you have the time. Does Thatboy like carrot cake?

You are right, know your priorities, cleaning can wait. Child grow up so fast, they don't wait for you.

You young thing!! You are so wise, when you are at our age, you probably can do more than the last cartoon! hehehe… No offense, just joking!

    Thanks so much.

  38. @Lyndsey
Oh yes, I am not comfortable too when I go to a house that is super clean. I have been to one of my friend's house where she keep wiping the table and the floor when I was there. I make all kinds of excuses not to go to her house after that. LOL!

When it comes from you, I know the carrot cake IS delicious!

You are so right about that!

    @Kim Bee
hehe, I love it when I know my post makes you giggle.

I know where you are coming from. It is true but then, have a balanceD Thanks for your compliment on the cake.

  39. I gave up dusting when I started blogging!!! However, if I begin to see dust balls, then and only then do I grab for the dust rag! (It seems to show more when the sun shines, maybe I should leave the curtains closed:)

Thanks for sharing, Veronica. Carrot Cake sure sounds good about now. I showed that "handsome" lady to my room-mate Marion (she's 91 and she laughed til she...:)

  40. @louise
How true, I think it is the same here. I usually invite guests to my house for dinner, never lunch cos day time the dust is obvious. I am glad your friend Marion had a good laugh and sorry for everything else happen! LOL!

I love to hear from you. Your comments mean a lot to me. Thanks!
